The new year is upon us and, with the excesses of Christmas behind us, people are keen to revive their spirits, replenish their livers and take an annual break from the booze.

There’s no doubt that a month off the sauce is a good thing.

However, abstinence in January might not be the great idea you thought it was and, contrary to popular belief, there are plenty of reasons why you should be reaching for the bottle come the new year.

1. It’s January

Which, in itself, is reason enough to have a drink.

Short days, crap weather and sod all to look forward to until Spring. Unless, of course, you have a solid line up on Netflix in the bag and a cheeky Shiraz eyeballing you from the corner of the room.

Let the nights in begin.

2. The British Liver Trust aren’t convinced

Instead, they recommend it’s far healthier to drink moderately throughout the year, with a few dry days every week and, whilst not deterring you from doing it, report that one booze-free month alone has very few long-term health benefits.

3. You’ll be a cliche

And that person who’s also signed up to an expensive gym in January that you’ll never use after February 1st.

4. You’ll be de-friended

Ok, not all teetotalers are dull but there is nothing that starts a snoozefest like daily Facebook posts on how long it’s been since you’ve touched a drop.

5. You’ll end up wishing a chunk of the year away

Because, let’s face it, who really looks forward to a month off the sauce.

6. Champagne contains proteins that are beneficial to short-term memory

Water does not.

7. Red wine is good for your heart

Being packed with antioxidants which produces similar benefits to heart strength as physical exercise.

And if it’s a toss up between half an hour on a step machine and a bottle of full-bodied Malbec …

8. The French wouldn’t dream of it

And despite being a bit smug in their ability to go out on a Friday night without getting totally trollied – they could teach us a thing or two about alcohol in moderation.

*Shudders*

9. Drinking makes you happy

Which doesn’t have to mean you get obliterated on Tequila every night but does mean that a good craft beer or cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc with dinner after a hard day at work will lift your spirits and is something to be enjoyed.

10. You’ll miss out on Burns Night fun

And regardless of whether you are Scottish or not, who can resist a wee dram of Whisky with their tatties and neeps.

11. You’ll have to wipe your social calendar

As Oscar Wilde said ‘I drink to make other people more interesting’ … especially at 11pm on a Friday night when you’re the only sober one in the room.

12. It’ll cost you a fortune in petrol

13. You can forget dating

Because a Tinder date is painful enough, without a sparkling water in your hand.

14. You’ll end up being a loser

Only 8% of people actually stick to their New Year’s Resolutions.

So, go on, get the round in.
