I love innovative new app ideas, and was super impressed with this one – Crumbs, the alternative city guide which puts a fresh spin on London and Paris with more cities to follow. What better way to add a bit of fun to your weekend, whether you’re a first time visitor or want to be a tourist in your own city (*amazing date idea alert!*) this is a fantastic way to have a blast and soak up some sights while you’re doing it.
Originally created 20 years ago as a book of London Treasure Trails by urban explorer, Hansel Ophidian, Crumbs was developed into the form of an app following his retirement and is the fun new way to explore a City – it’s a Treasure Hunt, Walking Tour and Trivia Quiz all rolled in to one!
Instead of following a guidebook or joining a walking tour, you discover the route by finding and answering “Crumbs”.
‘Crumbs’, themselves, are multiple-choice questions based on clues found along the Trail or interesting trivia about the area. Players score points for Crumbs – and for finding hidden “Gems” – five photos of something unusual found somewhere along the Trail.
Trails start (and finish) at central London tube stations and typically last a couple of hours. Trails take you to the area’s major sights and curiosities so it’s perfect for sightseeing. Trails can be paused while you visit a sight or take a break and the App even prompts you when there’s a good photo opportunity.
The App already contains 30 Trails in central London and other Trails are being added regularly to cover all Zone 1 stations by the end of 2016.
Crumbs is a free download which includes one free Trafalgar Square Trail and, until 30 September, another free Trail of the user’s choice. Further Trails are priced at £2.29 (iOS) / £1.89 (Android) and discounted prices apply for “pick n’ mix” or themed packs of 3, 5 or 10 Trails e.g. a pack of 10 Trails is priced at £9.99 (iOS) / £9.59 (Android).
